Tiger baseball team sweeps doubleheader against Barton

Playing a doubleheader against Barton Community College Sunday in Arkansas City, the No. 7-ranked Cowley College baseball team flashed dominant pithing in a 2-1 win of game one before showing its offensive prowess in a 10-3 win of the nightcap.

Cowley improves to 6-2 on the season, while Barton falls to 6-2.

Cowley head coach Darren Burroughs felt his team showed progress in the sweep of the Cougars.

"We made some nice plays defensively and pitched it well," Burroughs said.

In game one, sophomore Grant Adler started on the mound for the Tigers and allowed only two hits and one run in four innings pitched. The righthander struck out five and walked none as he left the game trailing 1-0.

Tiger reliever Miguel Fulgencio followed with two spotless innings of relief and Cowley went ahead 2-1 thanks to a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. In the two-run fifth, Trey DeGarmo and Bryce Madron both walked and came around to score on a fielding error by Cougar shortstop Ricardo Sanchez.

Fulgencio pitched another 1-2-3 sixth inning before giving way to Tiger closer Isaac Stebens, who stuck out two while retiring the side in the seventh. The save for Stebens was his second of the season.

Shortstop David Herring had two of Cowley's four hits as the Tigers' out-hit Barton 4-2.

In game two, Cowley had five pitchers combine to strike out 16 Barton batters. Freshman Aaron Weber started on the mound and struck out six in 3 2/3 innings. The righty allowed five hits and two runs as he improved his record to 2-0 on the season.

The Tigers would score three runs in the first inning, fourth inning, and sixth inning before adding a single run in the eighth as they out-hit the Cougars 14-8.

Sophomore centerfielder Bryce Madron led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run off Hunter Hesseltine and added a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth as he finished 3-for-5 with four runs batted in and three runs scored.

Janson Reeder, batting second, added three hits and two runs batted in. Other Tigers to drive in runs were Haden O'Toole, David Herring, Jack Hill, and Elijah Wohl.

"We saw some guys start to get their groove back a bit at the plate," Burroughs said.

The Tigers have moved up its four-game home series against Indian Hills. The teams will play a single, nine-inning game Thursday at 1 p.m. followed by a doubleheader Friday beginning at 1 p.m. and a single game Saturday at 1 p.m.

"Indian Hills is a quality program, we look forward to playing them," Burroughs said. "We will work to keep getting better."
