Tiger baseball team earns split of a four-game series against Indian Hills

After dropping the first game of a four-game series against Indian Hills Community College Thursday in Arkansas City, the No. 6-ranked Cowley College baseball team came back to earn a split of the series by sweeping a doubleheader on Friday, 5-3 and 14-4, before losing Saturday's finale by a score of 14-9.

Cowley is now 8-4 on the season, while Indian Hills is 2-2.

"It was good to win the doubleheader on Friday," Cowley head coach Darren Burroughs said. "We would have liked to have won the game on Saturday, but we still saw some positive things in the series."

On Saturday, Grant Adler started the first game of the doubleheader and allowed three hits and two runs in four innings pitched as he improved his record to 2-0 on the season. Miguel Fulgencio followed with two innings of relief before Isaac Stebens tossed a 1-2-3 seventh inning to earn the save.

Sophomore centerfielder Bryce Madron homered and second baseman Conner Gore added two hits in the win.

Jack Nelson (0-1) took the loss for Indian Hills as he allowed three runs in two innings.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Cowley led 5-4 before exploding for nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to run-rule the Warriors 14-4. Sophomore shortstop David Herring belted a grand-slam homer in the win, while Carson Hunt and Logan Vaughan also homered and combined to drive in six runs.

Aaron Weber (3-0) started on the mound for Cowley and allowed four hits and three runs in four innings pitched. Arturo Rodriguez (0-1) took the loss for Indian Hills.

In Saturday's finale, Madron homered twice and drove in five but it was not enough as Indian Hills broke a 5-5 tie by scoring six runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Sophomore designated hitter Janson Reeder added three hits in the finale, while Madron went 9-for-17 with three home runs and seven runs batted in during the four-game series. Madron now leads the Tiger with five home runs, seven doubles, and a .413 batting average.

The Tigers threw eight pitchers in Saturday's finale. Sophomore J'Briell Easley got the start and allowed four runs in 2 2/3 innings. Tanner Vaughn (0-1) allowed one run in the fifth inning and was charged with the loss.

Jack Payne (2-2), Indian Hills' fourth of six pitchers used on Saturday, earned the win. Warriors' first baseman Sergio Chavez hit two of Indian Hills' four homers in the victory.

The Tigers will play a single, nine-inning game, at Seminole State College Tuesday at 1 p.m. Cowley lost an extra inning contest against the Trojans by a score of 8-5 back on February 20.

"We are looking forward to playing them again," Burroughs said. "We will continue to find things about our guys and look to keep improving with good results."
