Groebl’s two grand slams power Tigers to 18-1 win over Coffeyville
With freshman Quinn Groebl looking like the second coming of Babe Ruth, the fourth-seed Cowley College baseball team run-ruled eighth-seed Coffeyville 18-1 at the Plains District Baseball Tournament held Wednesday at Dean Evans Field in Salina, KS.
Groebl hit a pair of grand slams in the first two innings before leaving the game with an ankle injury. Groebl would finish with eight runs batted in. His teammates would continue to pour it on in his absence, scoring three runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth as they went on to the 18-1 five-inning win.
Cowley (44-10) advances to face second-seed Johnson County on Thursday at 4 p.m. Cowley won three of four games against Johnson County (48-11) in the regular season. Still, the Cavaliers nipped the Tigers for the conference title by one game.
Four Tigers had two hits apiece as Cowley out-hit Coffeyville 12-4.
Freshman Russ Smith (9-1) took advantage of the run support and held the Red Ravens to five hits and one run, to go along with five strikeouts.
In what has been a crazy tournament already, top-seeded Barton County was ousted after being run-ruled in back-to-back games.
Coffeyville (35-20) will face Cloud County in an elimination game on Thursday at 1 p.m.
