In a matchup of teams with identical 28-5 records and separated by only one spot in the seeding for the national tournament, the ninth-seeded Cowley College Tigers ran into an eighth-seeded Northwest Florida State team that had advanced to each of the past two national title games, capturing the championship in 2022.

With a large contingent of Tiger fans in the stands to cheer on the Cowley College men’s basketball team, the ninth-seeded Cowley College Tigers defeated 24th-seed Allegany College of Maryland 87-64 in the First Round of the NJCAA Division I Men’s National Basketball Championship played Sunday afternoon inside the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Cowley College sophomore Jeff Nwankwo was in the “zone” during the Tiger basketball team’s game at No. 24-ranked Butler. Nwankwo scored 23 first-half points to help Cowley to a 40-20 advantage and finished with a career-high 37 points in the Tigers 81-65 road win Wednesday in El Dorado.
