Tigers shutout No. 14-ranked Dodge City 2-0

Returning home after a three-game road trip, the No. 4-ranked Cowley College men’s soccer team jumped out to an early lead against 14th-ranked Dodge City and held on to win 2-0 Wednesday at the Mark A. Phillips Athletic Complex in Arkansas City.

Returning home after a three-game road trip, the No. 4-ranked Cowley College men's soccer team jumped out to an early lead against 14th-ranked Dodge City and held on to win 2-0 Wednesday at the Mark A. Phillips Athletic Complex in Arkansas City.

It took just over a minute and a half into Wednesday's game for Cowley to get on the scoreboard as Caique Trivelato headed in a well-executed crossing pass from Filipe Freitas. The goal by Trivelato was his team-leading fourth of the season.

"We always want to set the tone early in the game, and Caique's goal was a confidence booster," Cowley head coach Ruy Vaz said.

Cowley controlled the game, as evidenced by the shot disparity (17-2), and got an insurance goal from Hideto Gondo with 20 minutes remaining. Gondo scored off an assist from Gabriel Reis.

Sophomore goalkeeper Rafael Furlani had to make only one save as Cowley recorded its fourth shutout.

"Dodge City is a very good opponent but were unable to match our intensity," Vaz said.

Cowley is now 8-1 overall and 3-1 in the Jayhawk Conference Western Division. Dodge City falls to 8-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

The Tigers will return to the road to face No. 19-ranked Johnson County Saturday at 3 p.m. in Overland Park, KS. The Cavaliers, winners of seven games in a row, are 9-3 overall and 4-1 in the Jayhawk East.

"It will be a very difficult contest," Vaz said. "Our players must be at the top of their game."
