Second half rally lifts Coffeyville past Lady Tigers 69-62

The Cowley College women's basketball team led for the first 28 minutes of Wednesday's home game against Coffeyville before watching the Red Ravens rally for a 69-62 road win.

Cowley led 20-13 at the end of the first quarter and 32-29 heading into halftime. The Lady Tigers' lead would grow to 39-31 following a three-pointer by Milena Fromming. However, Coffeyville began to chip away at its deficit and grabbed its first lead of the game at 48-47 following a basket by Nakia Cullom with 1:35 left in the third quarter.

A basket by Cowley freshman Jana Radovanovic would give Cowley a one-point lead (49-48) heading into the final quarter of play.

The fourth quarter would feature seven lead changes and two ties, the last of which came at 59-59. A three-pointer by Coffeyville's Kennady Roach would break the tie with just over two minutes left and Coffeyville would out-score Cowley 10-3 over the final 4:30 of play.

Cowley went 3-of-8 from the free-throw line and had some costly turnovers down the stretch.

"We battled hard, but just did not finish the game well," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. "The missed free throws and turnovers cost us."

After being limited to only nine minutes and four points scored in the first half due to foul trouble, Coffeyville sophomore Faith Simpson scored 15 second half points and helped lead the Ravens' comeback.

Cowley was led by sophomore post player Martyna Kowalska's 16 points and nine rebounds, while Fromming added 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting from three-point range. However, Cowley shot only 20 percent from the floor (3-of-15) in the fourth quarter as they were out-scored 21-13.

The Lady Tigers are now 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the Jayhawk Conference, while Coffeyville improves its record to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Cowley will head out to play at Dodge City Saturday at 1 p.m. The Lady Conquistadors are 5-1 on the season.

"Dodge City is really good and is a tough place to get a win," Clark said. "We have got to shoot the ball at a higher percentage and have also got to be able to take better care of the ball late in the game."
