Lady Tigers pick up first conference win with 63-52 victory over Barton

Holding Barton County to 31 percent shooting, the Cowley College women's basketball team picked up its first conference win of the season with a 63-52 victory over the Cougars Tuesday night inside W.S. Scott Auditorium.

The victory improves Cowley's record to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the Jayhawk Conference, while Barton falls to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Cowley held Barton to just 2-of-10 shooting in the opening quarter as they led 13-5 after the first 10 minutes of play. The Tigers' lead would grow to 27-9 following a basket by sophomore Martyna Kowalska.

Cowley led 33-21 at the end of the first half and again pushed its lead to 18 points (43-25) after a basket by Shamahra Henderson with 6:42 left in the third. After the Cougars pulled within 47-36, Cowley would score the final four points of the quarter to lead 51-36.

Barton would not get closer than 11 points in the final quarter as Cowley snapped its three-game skid.

Sophomore Baylee Fincher scored nine of her game-high 17 points in the fourth quarter, while Henderson and Milena Fromming added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Mikaela Hall was the lone Barton player in double figures with 11 points.

Cowley will try to make it two wins in a row when they host Northwest Kansas Technical College Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
