Hot shooting Barton takes down Lady Tigers 81-61

After giving up more than 80 points only once in its first 16 games, the Cowley College women's basketball team has allowed its opponents to eclipse that total in each of the past two games as they suffered a second straight defeat, 81-61 Saturday at Barton Community College.

Cowley led 23-21 following a three-pointer by sophomore Shamahra Henderson with 6:30 left in the first half of Saturday's game. However, Barton would score 10 straight points and took a 41-28 lead into halftime following a three-pointer by Morgan Meyers in the closing seconds of the first half.

"I felt like that three at the end of the half kind of deflated us," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said.

Barton would score the first four points of the second half and led 58-41 after three quarters of play. The Cougars shot 50 percent from the floor, while holding Cowley to 33 percent shooting in the 20-point win.

"We could not get anything going offensively," Clark said. "It was a struggle all day long."

Sophomore point guard Milena Fromming led Cowley with 12 points. Freshman Jana Radovanovic also played well as she came off the bench to score eight points in nine minutes for the Lady Tigers.

"I thought our bench played hard and gave us a little bit of energy," Clark said.

Brennan Kirchhoff led four Barton players in double figures with 19 points, while Jenny Nkem Womsi added 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Cowley is now 11-7 overall and 7-6 in the Jayhawk Conference. The victory moves Barton (11-9) in front of Cowley and into sixth place in the conference standings with a record of 8-6.

After having Monday's regularly scheduled game at Butler Community College postponed, the Lady Tigers will look to snap their two-game skid when they play at Northwest Kansas Technical College Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Mavericks are 3-15 overall and 1-13 in the conference.

"It's a long haul to play, so we will need to show up," Clark said. "We can't go through the motions like we did on Saturday."
