Lady Tigers knock off 11th-ranked Hutchinson 55-49

After giving up an average of 89.5 points per game in its first two Jayhawk Conference games, the Cowley College women's basketball team has held its past three opponents to 53 or fewer points, including surrendering only 49 points in a 55-49 win over No. 11-ranked Hutchinson Community College Wednesday inside W.S. Scott Auditorium.

"We are getting better defensively, and that has been the key all along," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said.

Cowley scored the first 10 points of Wednesday's game and led 17-8 after one-quarter of play. Gracie Gilpin's three-pointer at the halftime buzzer would lift Cowley to a 26-16 advantage.

Hutchinson would then pull within 36-34 after three-quarters of play and grabbed its first lead of the game (37-36) on Journey Armstead's three-point play with 8:01 left.

Cowley would respond by scoring the following six straight points, and sophomore Baylee Fincher scored nine of her game-high 17 points in the final quarter as the Lady Tigers held on for the six-point win.

"I thought we showed some fight," Clark said. "This was a huge team win."

Gilpin joined Fincher in double figures with 16 points, while freshman N'dack Mbengue added six points and 11 rebounds.

Monae Duffy led Hutchinson with 14 points. The Blue Dragons made just 3-of-21 three-point attempts as they fell to 9-2 overall and 3-2 in the Jayhawk Conference.

Cowley, winners of two games in a row, is now 7-4 overall and 2-3 in the conference. The Lady Tigers will attempt to make it three wins in a row when they play at Independence Community College (6-5) Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
