Lady Tiger soccer team blanks last place Dodge City

Facing a Dodge City squad that entered Wednesday's contest riding a five-game losing streak, the Cowley College women's soccer team continued the Lady Conquistadors' slide by earning its second straight 3-0 victory Wednesday in Arkansas City.

The victory improves Cowley's record to 6-3 overall and 3-3 in the Jayhawk Conference Western Division. Dodge City (1-6-1) remains winless in the conference at 0-6.

Cowley controlled the game from the outset and was finally able to break through on a goal by Lina Fasquelle with 17:50 left in the opening half. The goal by Fasquelle came when she sent a beautiful free kick from about 25 yards out over the head of the keeper.

Fasquelle, who leads the Lady Tigers with five goals on the season, has scored in four straight games.

"Lina has really stepped up and is a leading force in our midfield," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said.

Less than one minute later, Ada Ronnemaa scored on a put-back to increase Cowley's lead to 2-0.

The score would remain that way until Cowley's Lucia Rivas scored off an assist from Nanaka Inaba with just under two minutes remaining.

"We came with intensity from the get-go and dominated possession of the ball," dos Santos said. "My only concern is we need to do a better job of finishing our opportunities."

Cowley had 13 shots on goal to none for Dodge City. The Lady Tigers will now prepare to play at Johnson County Saturday at 1 p.m. in Overland Park, KS. The Lady Cavaliers are 5-7 on the season.

"Johnson is always a tough opponent and will raise their play against us," dos Santos said. "We need to be focused and ready for a tough road game."
