Lady Tiger soccer season comes to an end with 5-2 loss at Coffeyville

The Cowley College women's soccer team had its up-and-down season end with a 5-2 loss at Coffeyville Community College in the first round of the District Playoffs held Sunday in Coffeyville.

After opening the season with three straight victories, the Lady Tigers looked poised to make another run at a fourth consecutive conference title. However, Cowley was unable to capture the success of past seasons as they finished third in the Jayhawk West.

Hoping to avenge a previous loss to Coffeyville, the Lady Tigers instead fell behind early and could not come back in Sunday's 5-2 defeat.

"Unfortunately, our season came to an end too early in the playoffs," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said. "We are no longer used to being in such a position anymore. Other teams are certainly happy to see us out."

Cowley finishes the season with a record of 9-8, while Coffeyville improves its record to 14-4-1.

On Sunday, Coffeyville made Cowley pay for a couple of mistakes in its back half of the field as they scored two goals in a five-minute span of the opening half to lead 2-0.

"Our team fought hard, but unfortunately mistakes, which has been a huge problem, happened several times allowing Coffeyville to score," dos Santos said.

Cowley would cut its deficit in half when Gabrielle Oliveira scored off an assist from Berta Del Hoyo with 17:20 left in the first half.

Two more mistakes in the Tigers' back half led to Coffeyville scoring an additional two goals eight minutes into the second half as the Red Ravens took a commanding 4-1 lead.

The Lady Tigers continued to battle and pulled within 4-2 when Nanaka Inaba scored on a penalty kick with 12:10 left to play. However, Coffeyville would end any chance of a Cowley comeback when Veronica Calixto scored her second goal of the game with just over four minutes remaining.

Cowley will say goodbye to the following sophomores: Alba Lopez, Jessica Meira, Esther Attwood, Michelle Smith, Sierra Burrow, Maria Coelho, Lina Fasquelle, Ivania Pena, Pauline Gockeritz, Angela Gatto, Anne Barbosa, and Gabrielle Oliveira.

"I'm very grateful and proud of the sophomores who represent Cowley College," dos Santos said. "It's hard for them to lose so soon. They are proud to be here and represented our institution with honor."
