27th annual Tiger Skins/Brian Groves Golf Tourney raises money for scholarships

In honor of former Cowley College golfer Brian Groves, the 27th annual Tiger Skins/Brian Groves Memorial Golf Tournament was held Saturday, August 20, at Ark City Golf & Fitness.

Brian Groves (Class of 1998) was a member of the Tiger golf team before moving on to Southwestern College in Winfield. He was tragically killed in a one-vehicle accident in 2002.

Honoring Groves' memory, the team of Jeff Shaw, Marty Moulton, Jr. Dowler, and Brock Dowler finished in first place in Flight A of the golf tournament. The second place team in Flight A consisted of Brock Buckingham, Brent Burroughs, Dax Shaw, and Tanner Armfield.

The first-place team in Flight B consisted of Bart Allen, Larry Walker, Kurt Campbell, and Michael Mora. The second place team in Flight B consisted of Troy Thrasher, Todd Clark, Rama Peroo, and Andy Scheef.

The first-place team in Flight C consisted of James Henry, Jesse Henry, Ken Bellmard, and Ida Williams. The second place team in Flight C consisted of Tim Hilario, Heather Marrs, Zeb Shelton, and George Torrez.

There were 32 teams and 45 hole sponsors at the tournament.

"We were very pleased with the success of this year's Tiger Skins Golf Tournament," Cowley College athletic director Jason O'Toole said. "Our goal was to return it to the big, fun tournament it was back in the day with a lot of golfers and sponsors coming together in support of Cowley Athletics. I believe we accomplished that with tremendous backing from our coaches, volunteers and sponsors. We want this tournament to continue being one that golfers enjoy playing in for many years to come."

Members of the Cowley College Spirit Squad and Tigerette Danceline assisted with the tournament.

An awards ceremony followed the golf tournament, while Creekstone Farms donated the hamburgers for the meal.
