Mekhi Cameron signs with Northern Colorado

Mekhi Cameron, the top returning scorer for the Cowley College men's basketball team, made it known where he will be playing collegiate basketball next season as he signed a letter of intent with NCAA Division I the University of Northern Colorado Wednesday inside the Tiger Athletic Hall of Fame Room.

Coming off a solid freshman campaign in which he averaged 12.7 points per game to go along with four rebounds per contest, Cameron has improved his ball handling and decision-making.

The 6'4" sophomore from Atlanta, GA, has taken his game to another level through the first three games of the 2022-2023 campaign as he is averaging 21.3 points and six rebounds per contest as the Tigers have gotten off to a 3-0 start.

Cowley head men's basketball coach Donnie Jackson is excited for Cameron to have the signing process out of the way.

"The coaching staff at Northern Colorado did an excellent job recruiting him since last season," Jackson said. "Coach Cory Fehringer and Coach Steve Smiley busted their tail to get it done in the early signing period."

Several schools were recruiting Cameron but ultimately felt Northern Colorado was the best fit.

"The culture at the school and the coach's honesty with me about my future played a major role in my decision," Cameron said. "The school felt like home. I hope to produce right away and bring that defensive edge."

The Bears, who play in the Big Sky Conference, went 22-16 during the 2021-22 season.

"I think Mekhi will fit well into what UNC wants to do," Jackson said. "They do a great job of developing guards, and Mekhi fits a need for their program. Mekhi earned this opportunity. He puts the daily work in that is required, and I am happy to see it pay off for such a great young man."

Although looking forward to playing for UNC, Cameron still has unfinished business with the Tiger basketball team. After its hot start to the season, Cowley is receiving votes in the national poll.

"Cowley is a really good environment and community as well," Cameron said. "Cowley has molded me and given me an even better work ethic. Coach Jackson and Coach (Roybell) Baez have helped me tremendously in becoming a better player and person. I want overall team success and hope to help Cowley hang some banners before I leave."
