Sophomores carry Lady Tigers to season-opening win over Washburn JV

The Cowley College women's basketball team leaned on its sophomores to help them win its season-opener over the Washburn University JV Monday night inside W.S. Scott Auditorium. The Lady Tigers' four sophomores combined to score 58 of the team's 66 points as Cowley held off the pesky Ichabods.

Cowley led 17-8 at the end of the first quarter and extended its lead to 40-23 following a put-back by freshman Lorette Chen just before the halftime buzzer.

Washburn would trim its deficit to 53-39 at the end of the third quarter and pulled within 57-45 following three free-throws by Maddy Hutley with 7:38 remaining.

However, Lady Tiger sophomore Baylee Fincher, who finished with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists, would score five straight points and Cowley held the Ichabods to only four points the rest of the way in the 17-point victory.

Sophomore Martyna Kowalska added 19 points and 13 rebounds, while fellow sophomores Milena Fromming (12 points, five rebounds) and Shamara Henderson (10 points, four boards) also played well.

"Our sophomores were really solid," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. "We want to play a deeper lineup and will continue to try and develop our bench in practice."

Freshman Carson Dean played 34 minutes in her Lady Tiger debut and finished with four points and 10 rebounds as Cowley out-rebounded the Washburn JV 41-26.

Irene Sanz led the Lady Ichabods with 14 points in the loss.

Cowley will remain home to face Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The Mavericks defeated Cloud County 80-79 in its season-opener on Monday.

"We will need to show up and play a little better than we did against Washburn," Clark said.
