Lady Tigers pick up 64-51 road win at Coffeyville

Having struggled to find success on the road, the Cowley College women's basketball team finally broke through for its first victory away from home with a 64-51 win at Coffeyville on Monday.

A low scoring first half saw Cowley lead 20-15. Three-pointers by Baylee Fincher and Milena Fromming helped Cowley's lead grow to double digits (26-15) in the opening minutes of the second half. Cowley's lead would grow to 33-17 following a pair of free throws by sophomore Martyna Kowalska and the Lady Tigers would hold a commanding 42-25 advantage heading into the final quarter of play.

Coffeyville would cut Cowley's lead to 52-43 midway through the fourth quarter, but that would be as close as they would get in the 13-point defeat.

Cowley rode the strength of its starters to the win as four of five starters played all 40 minutes and only one player, Lexi Rose, was needed to come off the bench.

"We played really well together and did a good job of battling through some things," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said.

Sophomore Baylee Fincher went 4-of-9 from three-point range and finished with a game-high 22 points as Cowley went 10-of-24 from beyond the arc while holding Coffeyville to just 2-of-17 shooting from long range.

"We hit some big shots at key times in the game," Clark said.

Kowalska also played well, finishing with 16 points and 16 rebounds.

"She was more physical than she has been. We hope that continues moving forward," Clark said.

The victory, Cowley's fourth in a row, improves the Lady Tigers' record to 11-5 overall and 7-4 in the Jayhawk Conference. Coffeyville falls to 12-5 overall and 6-5 in the conference. The Red Ravens were led by Nakia Cullom's 14 points.

Cowley will look to continue its winning ways when they host Dodge City Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The Conquistadors, 10-6 overall and 5-5 in the Jayhawk Conference, rallied to defeat the Lady Tigers 72-59 back on November 20.

"We played poorly at Dodge City," Clark said. "We hope to correct that and keep things rolling in a positive direction."
