Lady Tigers can't get over the hump in 67-60 road loss

Playing at Garden City on Saturday, the Cowley College women's basketball team battled to the very end before falling 67-60.

Cowley trailed only 14-12 at the end of the first quarter, but Garden City shot 69 percent in the second quarter to open a double digit halftime lead (33-23). Cowley would pull within 50-44 heading into the final quarter of play and trailed only 62-60 following a pair of free throws by Baylee Fincher with 20 seconds left.

Forced to foul, Garden City made 5-of-6 free throws in the closing seconds to hold on for the seven-point win.

"We had plenty of chances Saturday, but could not get a stop on defense or missed shots on the offensive end," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said.

Martyna Kowalska led Cowley with 17 points, while Shamahra Henderson added 11 points and nine rebounds. The duo combined to go 12-of-22 from the floor, while the rest of the Lady Tiger starters shot only 5-of-30.

Garden City out-shot Cowley 44.6 percent to 33.3 percent from the floor and were led by Dayshawna Carter's 20 points. The Broncbusters (17-8) move ahead of Cowley into a tie for fourth place in the Jayhawk Conference with a record of 12-8.

Cowley is now 15-10 overall and 11-9 in the conference. The Lady Tigers will play at Colby Monday at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Trojans are 8-16 overall and 5-13 in the conference.

"We need to bounce back at Colby," Clark said.
