Tiger wrestling has three individual champs at Friends Invite

Competing for the first time since November 21, the Cowley College wrestling team showed no signs of rust as they had three individual champions and placed at nearly each weight class of the Friends University Invite held Saturday in Wichita, KS.

Cowley sophomore Trenton Grant pinned Barton's Stephan Baldwin in the championship match of the 133-pound weight class, while freshman Melton Powe (174 pounds) and Kanden Young (197 pounds) also went unbeaten and placed first in their respective weight classes.

"I thought we wrestled really well and saw the competition we needed to see," Cowley interim head coach Justice Circle said. "I was impressed with how most of the guys wrestled after the long break."

Powe defeated Pratt's Christian Robinson 17-2 in the finals of the 174-pound weight class, while Young pinned all four of his opponents.

"Having Young in the lineup will help tremendously," Circle said. "Trenton (Grant) continues to lead by example, and Melton continues to do well for us."

Chance Davis, an NCAA Division I transfer from the University of Arkansas Little Rock, also wrestled well and placed second at 165 pounds.

Cowley will now prepare to host its first duel of the season when they take on Neosho County Tuesday at 7 p.m.

"Neosho is a good team," Circle said. "They struggled a bit in the first semester, but we will not overlook them. I expect the fans to see some good matches."
