Lady Tiger soccer team records second straight shutout victory

After a difficult stretch, the Cowley College women's soccer team is getting hot at the right time, as evidenced by its second straight shutout victory. This time, the Lady Tigers would get a pair of first-half goals and hang on for the 2-0 road win at Dodge City on Wednesday.

Cowley (9-7) finished third in the Jayhawk Conference Western Division with a record of 6-7, while Dodge City (5-9-1) was fourth in the conference with a record of 4-9.

On Wednesday, in a two-minute span, Cowley got goals from Berta Del Hoyo Borrell and Lea Evin to lead 2-0 only 10 minutes into the game.

"Berta took advantage of the opportunity, and Lea has been stepping up and growing into the game," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said.

Lady Tiger goalkeeper Alba Lopez made the lead stand up as she stopped all three shots she faced.

Cowley out-shot Dodge City 9-4 and controlled the game, but dos Santos would have liked to have seen his team be more aggressive and attack the goal more.

"We were happy to control the game, but we have got to finish more scoring opportunities," dos Santos said.

Lucia Rivas and Laura Pouedras assisted on Cowley's goals.

The Lady Tigers will open play in the District Playoffs by playing at Coffeyville Sunday at 3 p.m. The Red Ravens are 13-4-1 on the season and finished second in the Jayhawk East. The Lady Tigers lost the lone head-to-head matchup, 3-2 on October 15.

"Coffeyville has a good team, so we will need to capitalize on the opportunities we create," dos Santos said.
