Cowley volleyball goes 3-1 at Triton Invitational

The top-ranked Cowley College volleyball team won three of four matches at the always challenging Triton Invitational played Friday and Saturday in Fort Dodge, IA.

On Friday, the Tigers defeated Sauk Valley (25-9, 25-23, 25-10) before losing a hard-fought, three-set battle against No. 7-ranked Iowa Central (25-23, 22-25, 25-17, 22-25, 12-15.

Then, on Saturday, Cowley took out No. 9-ranked Kirkwood (25-17, 25-19, 27-25) and 20th-ranked North Dakota State College of Science (25-18, 25-22, 25-17) in straight sets to improve its record to 30-3 on the season.

"We played some tough teams this weekend and got pushed like we needed to get ready for playoffs," Cowley head coach Steven Gream said. "Iowa Central was a quality opponent that played very strong at home, and we just couldn't finish to give them the win in five sets."

Landry Cate and Vivianna Solis were named to the Triton Invitational All-Tournament team, and Vivianna Solis was named best setter of the Tournament by the coaches.

"Landry and Vivianna were excellent in the tournament, along with several other teammates," Gream said. "The tournament chose two players from each team, but we had some quality performances from multiple players this weekend. Both would tell you that they couldn't have done it without their teammates."

Solis had a season-high 57 assists in the match against Iowa Central, while freshman Anna Kiss added 21 kills and 12 digs.

Cowley will return to action Wednesday when they play at Coffeyville at 6:30 p.m. The Red Ravens, winners of eight matches in a row, are 24-7 overall and 4-3 in the Jayhawk East.

"Coffeyville is playing some good ball right now and is very tough at their place," Gream said. "We need to use our experience this past weekend and play quality Cowley volleyball against them."
