Tiger baseball team advances to semifinals with 9-6 win over top-seeded Cougars

Facing the top-seeded Barton County Cougars Thursday night at the Region VI Championship played Thursday at Wichita State University's Eck Stadium, the fourth-seeded Cowley College baseball team got home runs from Cooper Schwindt and Trayson Miller in a 9-6 win.

Cowley (37-20) advances to play second-seeded Johnson County (53-7) at 4 p.m. Friday at Eck Stadium.

Barton County (50-9) had its nine-game winning streak end and will play Fort Scott at 1 p.m. Friday in the double-elimination tourney.

On Thursday, freshman Danny Satterlee got the nod on the mound for the Tigers and limited the damage to a pair of solo home runs in four innings pitched.

Trailing 2-1, Schwindt hit a solo home run off Barton starting pitcher Tegan Cain in a two-run fourth inning that put Cowley in front 3-2. The Tigers would then chase Cain from the game in the top of the fifth as they scored six runs in the innings, highlighted by Miller's three-run homer.

Leading 9-2, Cowley allowed Barton to pull within 9-6 after scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and another run in the ninth off a solo home run by Quinton Robertson.

The Cougars would put the tying run on base before sophomore reliever Carlton Perkins recorded the final out to preserve the 9-6 win.

Schwindt and freshman Jadyn McNealy had two hits apiece as Cowley finished with nine hits in the victory.

The winner of today's game between Cowley and Johnson will advance to the championship game on Saturday at 4 p.m. The loser will play Saturday at 1 p.m.
