Tiger track and field athletes compete at three separate meets

With the Region/Conference Championships approaching in two weeks, the No. 9-ranked Cowley College men's and women's track and field teams had athletes competing this past weekend at the Coyote Distance Carnival at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, the John Jacobs Invitational held at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK, and at the Cloud County Thunderbird Classic in Concordia.

National qualifiers at Kansas Wesleyan were Santiago Nunez-Gonzalez and Muneer Suied in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase and Andrea Garcia Gonzalez in the women's 1,500-meter run.

"Andrea was on the bubble all season, so it was good to see her finally get the national qualifying done," Cowley head coach Cameron Rieth said. "This was also Muneer's first time qualifying in an event for nationals. Santiago helped pace him to get it done while qualifying himself."

Lance Blubaugh won the men's javelin at the Thunderbird Classic and qualified for nationals with his throw of 180-2. Julian Washington and Jacob Creswell also had personal best marks in the hammer, while Jean-De Dixon had personal best marks in three throws events.

"It was good to keep the competition rust off and work through our techniques and as well as learning how to make adjustments in different weather situations," Rieth said. "Lance Blubaugh crushed the javelin on a grass surface and hit a PR in the hammer. Jean-De also had himself a day hitting PRs in all his events."

The Region/Jayhawk Conference Championships will be held May 5-6 in Coffeyville, KS.
