Tiger track and field athletes split up for meets

The Cowley College men's and women's track and field teams had two separate squads travel to compete this past weekend, with most of the team resting. A small distance crew traveled to chase better wind conditions at the Kansas Wesleyan University Coyote Distance Carnival on Friday night, and a small portion of the track team traveled to Tabor College on Saturday.

On Friday night at KWU, the Tigers benefited from beautiful weather for distance races.

"We had some great performances, but the highlight of the night was Tavarie Campbell's performance in the 800-meter run," Cowley head coach Cameron Rieth said. "We made an effort for Tavarie to break the school record in the 1,500-meter run, and she got out good but faded over the last lap. She bounced back with a solid national qualifying performance in the 800-meter run on tired legs and a short recovery. Several others had great building block performances."

On Saturday at Tabor, the Tigers faced the coldest conditions of the year, impacting some jumping events. However, the team had a solid weekend out of the throws squad.

Sophomore Julien Washington had an absolute bomb in the hammer, pushing him up to second in the NJCAA rankings. Jacob Creswell also established a personal best in the hammer.

On the women's side, Cierra Gray had an impressive personal best in the shot and is ranked sixth in the event.

The Tiger men's and women's track and field teams will compete at the Mike Kirkland Southwestern College Relays on Saturday in Winfield before participating in the conference/region meet on May 3-4 in Pratt, KS.
