Student-Athlete Policies

The Cowley Athletic Department adheres to transparent guidelines that are put forth in our institutions' policies and procedures. Below are just a few that directly pertain to student-athletes.

  • 452.00 Varsity Athletics
    • The College is a member of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference and of the National Junior College Athletic Association. College athletes are expected to be students first, with their participation in athletics a part of a well-rounded educational experience. Their personal conduct is expected to begin the highest tradition of amateur athletics.
  • 453.00 Fairness in Women's Sports Act
    • In accordance with Kansas State House Bill 2238, interscholastic, intercollegiate, intramural or club athletic teams or sports that are sponsored by Cowley College shall be expressly designated as one of the following based on biological sex: (1) Males, men or boys; (2) females, women or girls; or (3) coed or mixed. 
  • 454.00 Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL)
    • Student-athletes at Cowley College may earn compensation from a third party unaffiliated with Cowley College, for the use of their name, image, or likeness (NIL.) Student-athletes must make sure that the activities comply with Cowley College’s NIL Policy, National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) guidelines and do not go above market value for the activity.
  • 465.00 Drug and Alcohol Abuse
    • In compliance with the Federal Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988 (Public Law 100-690) and the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act of 1989 (Public Law 101-226), Cowley County Community College (Cowley College) prohibits the unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensation, possession, or use of a controlled substance or abuse of alcohol (as defined in these Acts) by a student or employee on college property or at any college event or activity.

Additionally, there are academic and individual rights and expectations policies for all students, including athletes, that can be found below.

Complimentary to the above-mentioned policies, Cowley College has numerous procedures; several are mentioned below that directly correspond with those policies already mentioned.

Notice of Non-Discrimination

Title IX Compliance

Students, their parents and employees of Cowley are hereby notified that the college does not disciminate on the basis of sex and is required by Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 not to discriminate on the basis of sex in its educational activities and employment practices. Any person having inquiries concerning Cowley's compliance with Title IX is directed to contact the Executive Director of Student Affairs at 125 S. Second St., Arkansas City, KS 67005 or by calling 620-442-0430, who has been designated by the college to cordinate the institution's efforts to comply with Title IX.

FERPA

Cowley County Community College and Area Vocational-Technical School complies with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which prohibits the release of educational records without student permission.
