Tiger baseball team opens lead atop Jayhawk Conference

Facing last place Highland Community College for a second consecutive day, the No. 9-ranked Cowley College baseball team completed a four-game sweep of the Scotties with wins of 8-3 and 20-2 Friday in Arkansas City.

The Tigers (37-7), winners of 12 games in a row, have opened a three-game lead in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division standings as they are now 25-3 in the conference.

In Friday's opening game, Cowley got home runs from Bryce Madron and Trey DeGarmo and out-hit the Scotties 10-3 in the 8-3 victory.

Chance Cox continued his string of strong starts as the freshman allowed just two hits and one earned run in six innings pitched. Cox is now 5-0 on the season, while lowering his ERA to 2.00. Chance Condit pitched the seventh inning to finish off the win.

Cowley would go on to score six runs a piece in the first, second and fourth innings as they run-ruled Highland 20-2 in game two.

Freshman Haden O'Toole led the way by hitting his second home run of the series and driving in six. O'Toole went 8-for-15 with eight runs batted in during the four-game series.

Sophomore Janson Reeder also played well in the series, going 9-for-13 to raise his average to .417. While, fellow sophomore Trey DeGarmo homered in both games on Friday.

Freshman Carson Pierce allowed three hits and one run, while striking out four as he improved his record to 2-1 on the season. Tiger relievers Logan Kimbro, Blake Priest, Carlton Perkins, and Isaac Stebens combined to allow just one run in four innings of relief.

Highland starting pitcher Connor Pruyser allowed 11 runs in 1 2/3 innings. The Scotties are now 6-39 overall and 1-23 in the Jayhawk East.

Cowley will remain home to face Rose State College (10-28) in a single, nine-inning game, Tuesday at 2 p.m.
