Tiger men’s tennis team knocks off ranked Washburn University squad

Ranked second in the NJCAA Men's Tennis poll, the Cowley College men's tennis team defeated Washburn University, which is ranked No. 17 in the NCAA Division II poll, Thursday in Topeka, KS. The Tigers slipped past the Ichabod's 4-3 to win its seventh match in a row and improve its record to 10-2 on the season.

The Tigers started by winning two of three doubles matches before splitting the six singles matches.

"The game against Washburn was another tough one against a top 20 ranked NCAA Division II team," Cowley head coach Manuel Raga said. "The guys came out playing great in doubles and we were able to win the doubles point. In singles we did not play as well as we have been, but we found a way to win."

Cowley's Jack Clements and Takeshi Taco won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles and also teamed to win at No. 1 doubles. Javier Gonzalez was also victorious at No. 6 singles as was the No. 3 doubles team of Carlos Castillo and Andoni Garmendia.

Cowley will next play at McPherson College Wednesday at 2 p.m.

*No. 1 – Jack Clements (CC) defeated Raul-Alin Dicu (WU) 6-7(4), 6-1, 7-5.

*No. 2 – Takeshi Taco (CC) defeated Miquel Perez (WU) 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-3.

*No. 3 – Aymeric Bruno (CC) lost to Paul Haase (WU) 1-6, 2-6.

*No. 4 – Alejandro Orihuela (CC) lost to Bradley Eidenmueller (WU) 1-6, 3-6.

*No. 5 – Andoni Garmendia (CC) lost to Daniel Bird (WU) 5-7, 2-6.

*No. 6 - Javier Gonzalez (CC) defeated Marc Roura Casi (WU) 6-1, 6-1.

DOUBLES

*No. 1 – Jack Clements & Takeshi Taco (CC) defeated Eidenmueller & Sebastian Pjontek (WU) 6-3.

*No. 2 – Aymeric Bruno & Alejandro Orihuela (CC) lost to Haase & Perez (WU) 4-6.

*No. 3 – Carlos Castillo & Andoni Garmendia (CC) defeated Bird & Dicu (WU) 7-6 (4).
