Lady Tiger softball team runs win streak to eight

The Cowley College softball team continued its strong start to conference play with a pair of wins over Hesston College Thursday in Arkansas City. The Lady Tigers swept the doubleheader, 3-1 and 9-4.

Cowley, riding an eight-game winning streak, is now 14-6 overall and 6-0 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. Hesston falls to 11-11 overall and 4-2 in the conference.

In game one, Ashlynn Mercer continued her string of strong starts by striking out 10 in the complete game victory. Teri Stanton's solo home run in the top of the seventh inning was the only run allowed by Mercer, who is now 9-3 on the season.

Mya Chapman had two of Cowley's six hits in the win.

In game two, Cowley got home runs from Maci Cole and Alivia Lange as they cruised to the 9-4 win. Lange drove in three, while first baseman Kayla McClellan went 3-for-3 with two runs batted in.

"I really thought we did a good job of pressuring them offensively more the second game," Cowley head coach Jenny Hoyt said. "Through the double header we left too many runners on and need to do a better job of executing with runners in scoring position."

Sydney Price struck out 10 in six innings as she improved her record to 3-0 on the season.

Cowley will look to continue its winning ways when they play a doubleheader at No. 12-ranked Kansas City Saturday at 1 p.m. The Blue Devils are 16-4 on the season.

"Going on the road to KCK this weekend offensively and defensively we have to be a little stronger and tighten up our game," Hoyt said.
