Lady Tigers sweep pair of games in Wichita

Taking a break from conference play, the No. 18-ranked Cowley College softball team swept a doubleheader against the Friends University JV Monday in Wichita. The Lady Tigers won the opener 6-4 before taking game two 10-4.

After starting the season with a record of 6-6, Cowley has won 22 of its past 26 games to improve its record to 28-10.

In game one, Cierah Jones drove in three runs and Maci Cole went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases as they held on for the 6-4 win.

"Cierah Jones came up big for us in game one scoring three runs to push us ahead," Cowley head coach Jenny Hoyt said.

Ashlynn Mercer (16-5) struck out 11 and allowed only two hits in the complete game win. One downfall in the win was the Lady Tigers committing four errors. Thus, only one of the four runs allowed by Mercer were earned.

Cole had another big game in the nightcap, finishing 4-for-5 with a double, triple, four runs scored and three runs batted in as she raised her average to .508. Jones added two more hits, including a double.

Laramie Neff also played well as she went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two runs batted in.

"There were several players that had a great day offensively for us," Hoyt said. "It was good to see Cierah lock in offensively and gain more confidence within her at bats."

Sydney Price (10-2) went the distance on the mound in game two and allowed eight hits and four runs, while striking out six.

Cowley will play a doubleheader at No. 11-ranked Johnson County Thursday beginning at 2 p.m. The Cavaliers are 22-10 on the season.

"Every game here on out is important," Hoyt said. "We have to be sharp all the way around and put up a strong fight."
