Cowley softball team sweeps Labette, runs win streak to nine

The wins keep coming for the No. 14-ranked Cowley College softball team as they ran their winning streak to nine games in a row with a doubleheader sweep of Labette Community College Thursday at the Ed Hargrove Softball Field. The Lady Tigers run-ruled Labette 12-3 in the opener before winning game two by a score of 6-3.

Cowley is now 34-10 overall and 22-4 in the Jayhawk Conference. Labette falls to 19-21 overall and 16-10 in the conference.

"The biggest thing I liked about the doubleheader was we responded every time they put pressure on us," Cowley head coach Jenny Hoyt said. "Labette is a strong team and can create any momentum you give them; however I was proud of our team and how we stayed in control of the pressure and the momentum the entire series."

What Hoyt was referring to was Cowley trailing 3-1 in game one before scoring 11 unanswered runs and then keeping the Lady Cardinals at bay in game two.

With Cowley trailing 3-1 in the opener, freshman Maci Cole blasted a three-run homer off the scoreboard in left-centerfield. Alivia Lange also homered as she and Cole drove in four runs apiece in the five-inning run-rule win.

Sophomore pitcher Ashlynn Mercer ran her record to 19-5 on the season as the right-hander allowed six hits and three runs in five innings pitched.

In game two, Cierah Jones homered and drove in three runs. The Lady Tigers had only three hits in the nightcap, but benefited from seven walks. Along with Jones homer, Maci Cole had Cowley's other two hits as she is now batting .487 with 13 home runs and 55 RBI.

Sydney Price went the distance on the mound for the Lady Tigers, allowing four hits and three runs to go along with four strikeouts. Price is now 13-2 on the season.

The Lady Tigers will look to keep pace with conference-leading Highland when they play a doubleheader at Hesston College Saturday at 1 p.m. The Lady Larks are 18-22 on the season.

"We have to continue to stay focused on our goal and play good softball," Hoyt said. "Being we are a few weeks away from post-season it's all about playing your best softball as well as playing together as a team and I really like the direction we are headed."
