No. 23-ranked Independence rides big second half to 83-61 win over Lady Tigers

Seward’s 18 three-pointers lift Lady Saints to 93-81 win

Making its first, long road trek of the season, the Cowley College women's basketball team led after each of the first three quarters of play Saturday at Seward Community College. However, the Lady Saints regained the lead midway through the fourth quarter and never looked back in the 93-81 win.

The Lady Saints trimmed a 49-43 halftime deficit to one point (62-61) entering the final quarter of play. Seward would then hit five of its season-high 18 three-pointers in the fourth quarter as they out-scored Cowley 32-19 over the final 10 minutes.

The Lady Tigers' led 72-68 before Seward out-scored Cowley 25-9 over the final six minutes of play.

"I thought we forced some shots when they hit a couple of three-pointers in the fourth quarter," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. "Our heads seemed to drop and we could not recover. We are having trouble finishing games right now."

Cowley falls to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division, while Seward improves to 2-0 in the Jayhawk West.

The loss overshadowed a breakout game for freshman post player Martyna Kowalska, who finished with a season-high 26 points and 11 rebounds.

"Martyna played really well," Clark said. "She ran the floor and did a good job of staying out of foul trouble. We need her to be involved."

Seward's Zhane Thompson and Sydney Wetlaufer each went 5-of-9 from three-point range and combined to score 40 points.

Cowley will return home to face Barton County Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Cougars are 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the Jayhawk West following a 102-45 win over Allen on Saturday.

"Barton always plays hard, so we will have to match their intensity," Clark said.
