Lady Tiger basketball team falls at Butler 99-72

Falling behind No. 9-ranked Butler Community College 24-4 Monday in El Dorado, the Cowley College women's basketball team could not recover in the 99-72 road loss.

"We had a poor game plan going into the game and did not rise to the occasion," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said.

The loss snapped Cowley's three-game win streak as the Lady Tigers are now 13-8 overall and 11-8 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. Butler (19-1) runs its record to 18-1 in the Jayhawk East.

After falling behind by 20 points only eight minutes into Monday's game, Cowley scored the final five points of the first quarter and closed to within 26-14 following a three-pointer by sophomore Shontrice Austin with 8:50 remaining in the first half. However, Butler kept Cowley at bay and took a 52-33 lead into halftime.

The Lady Grizzlies scored the first six points of the second half and never looked back en route to the 27-point win. Skyla Knight led six Butler players in double figures as she finished with 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting.

Cowley made only 3-of-34 three-point attempts and were out-shot 58 percent to 34 percent in the loss.

Martyna Kowalska came off the bench to lead Cowley with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Jayden Marlnee and Shamara Henderson added 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Cowley will wrap up the regular season by playing host to Cloud County Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The T-Birds (10-10) are 9-10 in the Jayhawk East.

"We will need to play well because Cloud has been playing better of late," Clark said.
