Tiger baseball team splits another doubleheader against Cloud County

Two days after splitting a home doubleheader against Cloud County, the No. 10-ranked Cowley College baseball team lost Saturday's first game at Cloud County by a score of 9-8 before rallying to win the nightcap, 25-17.

"Our hitters did a great job in the doubleheader and stayed with their approach at the plate," Cowley head coach Darren Burroughs said. "We are just still struggling to be consistent on the mound."

Cowley is now 6-2 on the season, while Cloud County is 7-6.

Trailing Saturday's opening game by a score of 6-3, the Tigers got a three-run homer by freshman Blake Robertson in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at 6-6. A two-run triple by left fielder Janson Reeder in the top of the sixth inning gave the Tigers an 8-6 lead.

However, the T-Birds Adler Pierson led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo homer off Tiger reliever Jordan Brewer. After a walk to Willie Ponce, Miguel Obeso (0-1) relieved Brewer on the mound. Noah Olson greeted Obeso with a single to put runners at first and third before Jaden Parsons came through with a two-run double to give Cloud County a 9-8 lead.

Cowley would put runners on first and third with one out in the top of the seventh inning, but T-Bird reliever Rans Sanders got David Herring to ground into a double play to end the game.

Reeder led Cowley at the plate by going 2-for-4 with a home run, triple, and four runs batted in

In game two, former Winfield High School standout Conner Woods came in to pitch in the top of the third inning and was not charged with a run in his inning of relief before the T-Birds scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game at 9-9.

The Tigers would fall behind 16-10 before striking for five runs in the top of the sixth inning and seven more in the seventh to lead 22-17. Cowley would score three more runs in the top of the ninth inning to finish off the 25-17 win.

Tiger third baseman Blake Robertson led Cowley's 20-hit onslaught by going 4-for-7 with two doubles and six runs batted in. Cowley shortstop David Herring went 4-for-6 with a home run, double and four RBI, while right fielder Felix Chenier-Rondeau homered and drove in four.

Cole Miller started on the mound for Cowley and allowed three first inning runs. Miller was one of nine Tiger pitchers used in the victory. Miguel Fulgencio (2-0) entered the game in the fifth inning and pitched through the seventh, allowing one hit and one run in 2 2/3 innings pitched.

"Miguel threw really well and helped solidify the game for us," Burroughs said.

Tiger relievers Cameron Allen and Isaac Stebens pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings, respectively to finish off the win.

Cowley will play at Rose State College Tuesday at 2 p.m. The Tigers' four-game series against Kansas City, which was set to begin Thursday, has been postponed. Instead, Cowley will play a doubleheader at Redlands Community College Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
