Tiger baseball team splits second doubleheader against Allen

After splitting a pair of games against Allen Community College in Arkansas City back on April 3, the No. 10-ranked Cowley College baseball team split another doubleheader against the Red Devils Tuesday in Iola, KS. The Tigers bounced back from a 14-6 loss in game one to defeat Allen 9-3 in the nightcap.

In game one, Tiger starting pitcher Oliver Laroque walked the first three batters to start the bottom of the third inning and was relieved on the mound by Cole Miller. After a strikeout, Miller allowed back-to-back two run doubles as Allen jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

The Red Devils scored two more runs off Miller in the bottom of the third inning to lead 6-0, before Cowley got run-scoring singles from Trey DeGarmo and Elijah Jackson to pull within 6-2 in the top of the fourth inning.

However, Johana Weisner and Damon Burroughs hit solo home runs and Kurt Golubski added a two-run homer off Caleb Case to give the Red Devils a 10-2 lead after four innings of play. Allen would go on to the 14-6 win as five Tiger pitchers combined to walk 11 batters.

"We walked too many guys in that first game and were unable to get a big hit with guys in scoring position," Cowley head coach Dave Burroughs said.

Elijah Jackson had three of Cowley's 11 hits and Janson Reeder hit a solo homer in the defeat. The loss was just the second of the season on the road for the Tigers.

Sophomore Garrett VanDeventer went the first three innings on the mound in game two and five Tiger pitchers combined to allow only five hits in a 9-3 win. Cowley is now 17-2 away from home.

"We pitched better the second game and gave us a chance to win," Burroughs said.

Cowley scored four runs in the third and fifth innings and never trailed in the six-run win.

Jackson hit a three-run homer and went 2-for-3 with four runs batted in, while Trey DeGarmo doubled and drove in a pair of runs.

"Jackson and DeGarmo had good days for us" Burroughs said.

Cowley is now 33-7 overall and 20-4 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. The Red Devils are now 24-14 overall and 11-11 in the conference.

Cowley will return home to play a doubleheader against Fort Scott Thursday beginning at 1 p.m. The Greyhounds are currently 24-18 on the season.
