No. 7-ranked Tiger baseball team blasts Dodge City 10-2 in sub-regional opener

The top-seeded Cowley College baseball team scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back in defeating eighth-seeded Dodge City 10-2 Thursday in the first game of the sub-regional played in Arkansas City.

The victory improves Cowley's record to 41-8 on the season. The Tigers advance to play Friday at 1 p.m. in Arkansas City against the winner of Thursday afternoon's game between fourth-seeded Barton County (33-16) and fifth-seed Coffeyville (25-21).

Dodge City (21-29) fell into the losers' bracket and was set to face the loser of the Barton vs. Coffeyville game later on Thursday.

Pitching with the early lead on Thursday, Tiger freshman Grant Adler allowed only one run in seven innings. Adler struck out eight and walked only one as he improved his record to 7-0 on the season.

"I got a lot of back up from my hitters early on which allowed me to go out there with no pressure and pitch ahead in counts," Adler said. "It's been a lot of fun to be a part of this team this season. As pitchers, we get a lot of run support. We want to try to keep this going as best we can."

Freshman shortstop David Herring belted his ninth home run of the season and led the Tigers at the plate by going 3-for-5 with four runs batted in. Freshman second baseman Elijah Jackson added three hits as Cowley out-hit the Conquistadors 11-6.

After allowing a run in the top of the eighth inning, Tiger reliever Garrett VanDeventer retired the final six batters he faced to finish off the 10-2 win.

Burroughs was happy his team only needed to use two pitchers in the opening game of the sub-regional.

"Grant did exactly what we wanted him to do and pitched exceptionally well," Cowley head coach Darren Burroughs said. "It's good we scored five in the first, but I am kind of disappointed we didn't score more in the game. But, that's baseball and its all about getting the first game jitters out of the way. We will climb back on the horse and be ready to go tomorrow," Burroughs said.
