Tigers score season-high 29 runs in win at Hutchinson

With seven players recording multiple hits in Tuesday's baseball game at Hutchinson Community College, the No. 12-ranked Cowley College Tigers scored a season-high 29 runs in a 29-16 victory over the Blue Dragons.

Cowley improves its record to 28-7 overall, while Hutchinson falls to 19-16.

Cowley had 18 hits in the win and also benefited from 15 Blue Dragon walks.

"It was a tough day to pitch and Hutchinson had a hard time throwing strikes," Cowley head coach Darren Burroughs said. "I was glad the guys stayed within their approach and didn't try to do too much at the plate."

Leading 13-11, Cowley blew the game open by scoring 13 runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Tigers had nine hits in the inning, including two-run singles by Trey DeGarmo and David Herring.

Batting fourth and fifth in the lineup, shortstop David Herring and second baseman Conner Gore combined to drive in 13 runs. Herring went 2-for-4 with seven runs batted in, while Gore went 3-for-5 with a home run and six RBI.

"Both those guys had big hits and did good things for us," Burroughs said.

Herring now leads the Tigers with 41 runs batted in, while Gore raised his average to .340.

Brigden Parker (2-0) went the first two innings on the mound for Cowley and earned the win. Parker allowed two runs, while striking out three. Parker was one of five Tigers to pitch in the game.

Cowley will now prepare to open a four-game series against Johnson County (30-9) by hosting a doubleheader against the Cavaliers Thursday at 1 p.m. Cowley is currently second in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division with a record of 17-3, while Johnson County is third with a conference mark of 13-3. Both teams are just behind conference-leading Kansas City (14-2).

"It is always exciting to play Johnson County," Burroughs said. "They have another solid team, so we expect a challenging series."
