Tigers split games at Coffeyville, take three of four in series

Three days after opening conference play with a pair of wins over Coffeyville Community College, the No. 20-ranked Cowley College baseball team wrapped up the four-game series between the teams with a doubleheader played Sunday in Coffeyville. The Tigers bounced back from a 5-2 loss in Sunday's first game to defeat the Red Ravens 5-1 in the nightcap.

Cowley is now 8-6 overall and 3-1 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division, while Coffeyville (11-10) is 1-3 in conference play. The Tigers have scored two or fewer runs in all six of their losses.

"We still have a long ways to go," Cowley head coach Darren Burroughs said.

In Sunday's opener, Coffeyville starting pitcher Ricky Hernandez went the distance on the mound, allowing only five hits and one earned run while striking out six.

Tiger starting pitcher Danny Satterlee (0-2) pitched into the fifth inning, allowing just four hits and one walk. However, three Cowley errors helped Coffeyville score five runs.

"When we make a mistake it seems to get magnified," Burroughs said.

Andrew Talburt came on in relief of Satterlee and did not allow a run in 1 2/3 innings of work.

In the nightcap, Cowley pounded out 10 hits and were led by freshman catcher Cole Martin going 3-for-4 with a run batted in. Jadyn McNealy, Cooper Schwindt, and Jordan Shepherd added two hits apiece.

Sophomore Brigden Parker (1-0) gave the Tigers a quality start on the mound, allowing just four hits and one run in four innings pitched. Parker struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Cade Perkins, Brett McComas, Tanner Vaughn, and Drew Duckhorn combined for five scoreless innings of relief.

Cowley will return home to play a nine-inning game against Butler Community College Tuesday at 2 p.m. The Grizzlies are 9-9 on the season.
