Tigers sweep home games against KCK, take three of four in the series

Coming from behind to win both games of its home doubleheader against Kansas City Kansas Community College Friday in Arkansas City, the Cowley College baseball team won three of four games in the series.

Cowley (11-8) is now tied with Neosho County for second place in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division with a record of 6-2. Johnson County is currently atop the standings with a record of 8-0.

"It was good we showed some fortitude and earned two good wins," Cowley head coach Darren Burroughs said.

On Friday, Cowley trailed 4-2 before rallying to send the game to extra innings. The game would remain tied at 4-4 until the bottom of the ninth inning. With runners at first and third and two outs, Kansas City chose to intentionally walk the Tigers' Ty Hammack to load the bases. The gamble did not pay off for the Blue Devils as freshman Jadyn McNealy followed with a walk-off single to score Garrett Rosenberry with the winning run.

Freshman Cole Martin led Cowley's 10-hit attack by going 2-for-4 with a double, triple, two runs scored, and a run batted in.

Danny Satterlee started on the mound for Cowley and allowed six hits and four runs in five innings pitched. Cole Abbott followed with 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, and Drew Duckhorn (2-0) earned the win by striking out three over 1 1/3 innings.

"Those guys really solidified things and gave us some quality innings," Burroughs said.

Trailing 5-4 in game two, the Tigers scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead 8-5. Kansas City would scratch across a run in the top of the seventh and had the tying run at the plate, but Cowley's Chance Condit got the Blue Devils' Jase Woita to pop up to end the game. Condit (1-2) earned the win as he allowed two hits and one run in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Sophomore Bridgen Parker started for Cowley and struck out seven while allowing four hits and three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Martin continued his recent terror at the plate by going 3-for-3, while Logan Vaughan, Trayson Miller, Cooper Schwindt, and Hammack had two hits apiece. Martin now leads the Tigers with a batting average of .347.

"Cole is seeing the ball really well right now," Burroughs said.

Kansas City's Mason Davenport allowed 12 hits in four innings as he fell to 3-2 on the season. The Blue Devils are now 13-10 overall and 2-6 in the conference.

The Tigers will play a single, nine-inning game at Seminole State College (OK) Tuesday at 1 p.m. before returning home to face Allen Community College in a doubleheader Thursday beginning at 1 p.m.

"Seminole is always a quality opponent that will provide us with a good mid-week game," Burroughs said. "We hope to continue to grow as we get back to conference play against Allen on Thursday."
