Hammack’s big day helps Tigers take a pair of games at Highland

Sophomore centerfielder Ty Hammack continued his assault on opposing pitching as he had five hits, two home runs and drove in seven runs in the Cowley College baseball team's doubleheader sweep at Highland on Thursday. Cowley won the opener 8-2 before taking the nightcap by a score of 11-8.

The hits remained hard to come by for the Tigers in the opener, but Cowley did enough to defeat Highland Community College 8-2. The Tigers had only five hits in game one yet drew 10 walks as they came away with the victory.

The game was tied 2-2 entering the sixth inning when Cowley scored three runs thanks to two walks, one hit, one error, and four wild pitches. Jadyn McNealy's run-scoring double was the Tigers' lone hit in the inning.

Hammack added a two-run single in the top of the seventh inning to help seal the 8-2 win. Hammack had three of Cowley's five hits while driving in three runs and scoring twice.

Sophomore Chance Cox allowed just five hits and two runs in five innings pitched. Cole Abbott came on in relief of Cox and pitched the final two innings.

Gavin Stowell allowed two hits, six walks, and two runs in five innings pitched for the Scotties.

Game two was tied 8-8 before the Tigers scored single runs in each of the final three innings.

Hammack homered twice and drove in four runs out of the leadoff spot. Hammack now leads the Tigers with a .382 batting average, six home runs, and 27 runs batted in.

Sophomore second baseman Haden O'Toole drew four of Cowley's 13 walks in game two, while McNealy and Cooper Schwindt had two hits apiece.

Cade Perkins went the first five innings on the mound for Cowley and allowed seven hits and five runs. Carlton Perkins and Drew Duckhorn came on to strike out eight in 3 2/3 innings of relief.

Highland starting pitcher Carter Poole walked eight and surrendered eight runs in 3 2/3 innings.

Cowley is now 16-11 overall and 11-3 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. Highland falls to 9-21 overall and 1-11 in the conference.

The teams will wrap up their four-game series by playing a doubleheader in Arkansas City, KS Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
