Tiger baseball team bounces back from shutout loss with 22 runs

The Cowley College baseball team had an up-and-down day at Labette Community College on Saturday as the Tigers were shutout in game one by a score of 1-0 before erupting for 22 runs in a 22-8 win in game two.

Cowley is now 30-18 overall and 20-8 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. The Tigers had their streak of conference titles end at five in a row as Johnson County clinched the Jayhawk East.

Labette is now 20-26 overall and 12-16 in the conference.

In Saturday's opener, freshman Danny Satterlee matched Labette starting pitcher Braxton Haywood by tossing up zeroes through the game's first six inning. However, he was relieved on the mound by Cole Abbott after allowing a leadoff single to Labette's Jeff Tucker.

Abbott, who has been stellar in relief, was not on this day as the Cardinals got to him for three straight hits, including the game-winning single from Mahrlon Torres. Satterlee (3-3) was charged with the run and four hits in 6 1/3 innings while striking out eight and walking one.

"Satterlee gave us a really good start, and I was sad to see it go to waste," Cowley head coach Darren Burroughs said.

Haywood (6-5) allowed just two hits as Cowley was shutout for the third time in the past six games.

Cowley let out some frustration in game two as the Tigers got hits from the top eight batters in its lineup. Leading 11-8 heading into the ninth inning, Cowley scored 11 runs in the inning.

Ty Hammack homered twice and drove in five runs, while Trayson Miller also homered and drove in five. Hammack now has 13 home runs and 54 RBI, while Miller has seven home runs and 46 RBI.

Eaden Holt hit the Tigers' fourth home run, and Cowley finished with eight extra-base hits in the win. The homer for Holt was his first as a Tiger.

"It was good to see us respond with a lot of runs in the nightcap," Burroughs said.

Cade Perkins (4-3) started for Cowley and allowed just one run in three innings. Eight Tiger pitchers combined to strike out 13 batters but also allow 17 hits.

Labette's Alex Ronk allowed seven runs in 3 2/3 innings as he is now 3-7 on the season.

Cowley will wrap up the regular season by playing a doubleheader at Fort Scott Wednesday at 1 p.m. before returning home to face the Greyhounds in a pair of games Saturday at 1 p.m. Fort Scott (34-18) has won 11 games in a row and is just two games behind Cowley for second place in the conference with a record of 18-10.

"We need to use this series to pole vault us into the playoffs," Burroughs said.
