Cox strikes out 10 in Tigers’ 6-2 win over Pratt

Hosting the best-of-three sub-regional in Arkansas City on Wednesday, the fourth-seeded Cowley College baseball team got a stellar pitching outing from sophomore Chance Cox in a 6-2 win over 13th-seed Pratt Community College for a 1-0 lead in the series.

Cox tossed eight scoreless innings, striking out 10 while walking only two. Pratt managed only two hits off Cox as he improved his record to 6-1 on the season.

Cowley would score all six of its runs in only two innings as they plated three runs on one hit in the fifth inning and three more runs on two hits in the sixth. Sophomore Ty Hammack singled in the three-run fifth and helped put the game out of reach with his three-run homer in the sixth. The homer for Hammack was his team-leading 17th of the season, as he finished with three of the Tigers' eight hits.

The Beavers avoided being shutout when Garryn Plummer hit a two-run homer off Carlton Perkins with one out in the top of the ninth inning.

Trenton Smith lasted six innings on the mound for Pratt but walked seven as he fell to 4-7 on the season.

Cowley (34-19) will attempt to win the series and advance to play at the Region VI Championship May 17-21 at Wichita State University when the teams play again Thursday at 1 p.m. in Arkansas City. If Pratt (24-32) were to win on Thursday, the teams will play again Friday at 1 p.m.
