Cox, Hill pitch Tigers to 3-1 win over Cloud County

In what was a pitchers dual, the fourth-seeded Cowley College baseball team broke a scoreless tie with three runs on no hits in the sixth inning in its game against fifth-seeded Cloud County at the Region VI Championship played Wednesday at Wichita State University's Eck Stadium. With sophomore Chance Cox dealing on the mound, the Tigers went on to the 3-1 win.

Cox (7-1) allowed three hits and one run in 6 2/3 innings as Cowley improved its record to 36-20 on the season.

Cloud County's Mason McConaughey stranded seven baserunners in five innings but was relieved after throwing 88 pitches. Brady Stueve came on to pitch and was wild from the start, walking four batters and allowing three runs before being relieved by Cayden Castellanos in the bottom of the sixth.

Cloud scratched across a run in the top of the seventh, but Tiger reliever Jack Hill avoided further damage by stranding the bases loaded.

The T-Birds would bring the tying run to the plate following a double by Karson Green in the top of the ninth inning. However, Hill worked around the double and finished the game by tossing 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

The Tigers managed only four hits in the victory but were patient enough to draw eight walks.

Cowley will play top-seeded Barton Community College Thursday at 7 p.m. in the double-elimination tournament. The Cougars, winners of nine games in a row, are 50-8 on the season.
