Tiger baseball to play for region title

With its season on the line, the fourth-seeded Cowley College baseball team got an excellent pitching performance from freshman Luke Singleton in a 4-1 win over seventh-seeded Kansas City Kansas Community College Saturday night at the Region VI Championships played at Wichita State University's Eck Stadium.

The Tigers (38-21) advance to Sunday's championship round where they will need to defeat top-seeded Johnson County twice to advance to the JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Co. The teams will play at 1 p.m. with a second game to follow if needed.

Singleton, who had pitched only 14 innings all season, allowed no runs in 6 1/3 innings before Jack Hill came on to pitch the final 2 2/3 innings.

"We were hoping Luke could give us three or four innings, but he just kept getting better as the game went along," Cowley head coach Darren Burroughs said. "He did a superb job and I am so happy for him. Using only two arms on the mound was big for us because we will have to piece meal our pitching together tomorrow."

Right fielder Cooper Schwindt had three of Cowley's seven hits in the win.

The Tigers will face a Johnson County team that has beaten Cowley in all five meetings this season.

"I have seen a lot of crazy things happen at this tournament, so at least we have this chance."
