Cameron’s big night leads Tigers to key 69-56 road win at Cloud County

Needing a win to keep its hopes of hosting a First-Round Region VI Tournament game, the Cowley College men's basketball team completed a season-sweep of Cloud County with a 69-56 win Saturday in Concordia, KS. With the win, the Tigers hold the tie-breaker over the T-Birds with one regular season contest remaining.

On Saturday, Cowley College sophomore Mekhi Cameron could not be stopped as he poured in /28 points and helped the Tigers stay in front the entire second half.

Leading 28-24 at the end of the first half, Cowley's lead would grow to double digits early in the second half and the Tigers would never look back in the 13-point road win.

"That was a great bounce back win after a tough loss at Butler," Cowley head coach Donnie Jackson said. "Cloud is a tough place to play and has a good team. It was good to come out on top."

Cameron, who has scored 927 career points, moved into 17th place on Cowley's al-time scoring list, as he went 7-of-9 from the floor, 5-of-7 from three-point range and 9-of-10 from the foul line.

"Mekhi really took over in the second half," Jackson said. "If he can get going down the stretch that would be huge for the team. When he plays well, we usually play well."

Point guard Mooch Austin also shined, going 4-of-6 from the floor, 4-of-4 from the free-throw line, while adding four rebounds and three steals.

Corey Sawyer led Cloud (14-15) with 12 points, but went only 4-of-12 from the floor.

Cowley improves its record to 16-13 on the season and is tied with Cloud for eighth place in the Jayhawk Conference with a record of 10-13. The Tigers will look to lock up a home playoff game when they host Pratt Community College (15-13) Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the season finale. The Beavers are tied for sixth place in the conference with Hutchinson.

"Pratt is a must win for us if we want a home playoff game," Jackson said. "We know what is at stake and we need to be ready to protect our home court."
