Tiger soccer team pulls out overtime win at Johnson County

In a battle between the top team in the Jayhawk Conference Western Division and the last place team in the Jayhawk East, the No. 4-ranked Cowley College men's soccer team survived a pesky Johnson County squad by pulling out a 1-0 overtime win Monday in Overland Park.

Cowley dominated possession of the ball throughout Monday's game, but Johnson County goalkeeper Cole Stewart was there time and time again to thwart the Tigers' scoring opportunities.

"He is a phenomenal goal keeper that has a bright future ahead of him in soccer," Cowley head coach Ruy Vaz said. "We dominated against a very well coached team, we just were not able to put the game away in regulation."

Stewart stopped Cowley's first 14 shot attempts before Caique Trivelato scored off an assist from Leonardo Palmieri five minutes into the extra session. The goal by Trivelato was his team-leading 11th of the season.

"Caique delivers in clutch situations," Vaz said. "We got a little casual with our play and cannot allow that to happen in this league. However, I am happy we got the win and were able to stay undefeated.

The shutout was the fifth of the season for Tiger goalkeeper Rafael Furlani as Cowley improved its record to 10-0 overall and 6-0 in the Jayhawk Conference West Division.

The Tigers will host Garden City Wednesday at 6 p.m. on the new turf that was recently installed at its soccer complex. The Broncbusters are 7-4-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the Jayhawk West.

"Garden City will be a difficult game, especially after only one day of rest," Vaz said. "Our guys are excited to play on the new field and hope to put on a good performance."
