Pair of late goals lift Tigers to 2-1 win at Neosho

Trailing for more than 80 minutes of its game at Neosho County on Saturday, the No. 4-ranked Cowley College men's soccer team scored two goals in the final five minutes to win 2-1.

Neosho raced out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to Jack Kay's goal only three minutes into the game. The score would remain 1-0 until Cowley sophomore Filipe Freitas scored off an assist from Yuki Sekiguchi with only five minutes remaining.

Less than one minute later, Gabriel Verona scored off an assist from Yuto Toyoizumi to lift the Tigers to the 2-1 win.

Rafael Furlani stopped three of the four shots he faced as Cowley improved its record to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in the Jayhawk Conference Western Division. The loss drops Neosho's record to 5-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

"It was a very important win against a tough team," Cowley head coach Ruy Vaz said. "I am proud of our persistence, resilience, and patience. Our hard work paid off in the end."

Cowley will now prepare to host No. 14-ranked Dodge City Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Conquistadors are 8-2 overall and 3-1 in the Jayhawk West.

"Our next game is a battle of similar styles, Dodge City is very good at keeping the ball, so it will pose a different challenge for us," Vaz said. "It will be another tough game, and we will work hard these next few days to be prepared."
