Nhavene places first at Wichita State UTR Tournament

Picking up where he left off in his freshman campaign at Cowley College, sophomore Bruno Nhavene recently placed first at the Wichita State University UTR (Universal Tennis Ranking) Tournament held at the Sheldon-Coleman Tennis Complex.

As a freshman, Nhavene teamed with Boruch Skierkier to win the fall doubles title at the ITA Cup in Rome, GA. Individually, he went 27-1 in singles play and was the national champion at No. 3 singles. He also went 29-2 in doubles play and teamed with Takeshi Taco to win the national title at No. 1 doubles.

His stellar play helped the Tigers capture the NJCAA Division I Men's Tennis National Tournament title, Cowley's first tennis championship since 1991.

At the Wichita State University UTR Tournament, Nhavene defeated Wichita State University's Mykhailo Kvantaliani (WSU) in the finals by a score of 7-6, 6-4.

"Bruno had an amazing performance this past weekend at the Wichita State UTR Tournament," Cowley head coach Arianna Raga said. "The team has been working very hard since the beginning of August, and the work is showing."

Nhavene has verbally committed to play at the University of Oklahoma after his spring season at Cowley. Raga hopes that Nhavene will continue to build off his success throughout the 2023-24 season.

"I am extremely proud of Bruno for such a big accomplishment," Raga said. "He is a great leader on and off the court, and we are very fortunate to have players like him."

The Tiger tennis teams will host the Tiger-Jinx Invitational on Friday and Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the Arkansas City High School Tennis Courts.
