Komagata, Papa named September Athletes of the Month

Excelling in their respective sports and the classroom, Cowley College sophomores Reiya Komagata and Rossana Papa were recently named the school's September Male and Female Athletes of the Month.

Men's tennis player Reiya Komagata is coming off an incredible freshman season as he was the national champion at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles as the Tiger tennis team captured its first national title since 1991.

Komagata recently won the ITA Regional Championship in singles and doubles and advances to play at the ITA National Championship on October 12-14 in Rome, GA. He is also a solid student with a 3.9 grade point average.  

Lady Tiger volleyball setter Rossana Papa is a three-time All-American who returned this year after a serious injury. She leads the NJCAA and the KJCCC in assists per set at 12.07. She has recorded six double-doubles, has been named Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Setter of the Week five times, and ranks third in the NJCAA in total assists at 917.

She is third in the KJCCC in aces per set and recently passed Caroline Foster for fourth place all-time in Cowley history in career assists at 2,456. Papa leads an offense that is ranked No. 1 nationally in total points, hitting percentage, and kills per set.

She is majoring in Biomedical engineering and has a GPA of 3.5.
