Defending national champs open with wins over NCAA Division II tennis teams

Showing they will once again be one of the top teams in the NJCAA, the defending national champion Cowley College men's tennis team opened the 2024 season with a pair of convincing road victories over NCAA Division II opponents.

On Saturday, Cowley faced St. Mary's University in San Antonio, TX. The Tigers defeated St. Mary's 6-1 by winning the doubles point and then winning five of six singles matches.

The dynamic duo of defending national champion tennis players Bruno Nhavene and Reiya Komagata helped lead the team at the top of the singles lineup and at No. 1 doubles.

On Sunday, Cowley traveled to Jacksonville, TX, to take on Jacksonville College. The Tigers mixed up their lineup in the dominating 7-0 win over the Jaguars. Cowley did not drop a set against Jacksonville College as they improved to 2-0 on the season.

"I am proud of the team for competing hard and winning both matches," Cowley head coach Ari Raga said.

Cowley will face two more NCAA Division II squads when they travel to face Midwestern State University at 1 p.m. Friday, February 9, before taking on Cameron University on Saturday, February 10 at 1 p.m. in Lawton, OK.

"I am excited for what's to come," Raga said.
