Indoor track and field teams open season at Washburn University Rust Buster

With high expectations for the Cowley College men and women's indoor track and field teams, both squads opened the 2022 season by competing at the Washburn University Rust Buster Saturday in Topeka, KS.

"We used this meet as a way to blow all the rust off and see where we are at with our men and women's teams," Cowley head coach Cameron Rieth said.

Sophomore Adrian Diaz-Lopez, the defending indoor national champion in the 3,000-meter run, placed first in the mile run. His time of 4:13.87 was the second fastest mile ran in school history and the fastest mile ever ran at the Rust Buster meet. Diaz-Lopez also placed second in the 3,000-meter run with a national qualifying time of 8:23.81.

"Adrian ran phenomenal and has done a good job of staying in shape," Rieth said.

Fellow sophomore Nicolas Aguado-Torres also ran well, winning 200 and 400-meter dash heats. Freshman Jaden Schneeberger of Ponca City, OK, also started strong by placing fifth in the weight throw.

On the women's side, freshman Genique Bassett won her heat in the 200-meter dash, while freshman Kristen Wilson ran well while placing 16th in the 3,000-meter run.

Cowley will again compete in Topeka when they take part in the Washburn All-Kansas Meet Saturday at 8 a.m.

"We will look to have more people compete this weekend," Rieth said. "We want to keep getting fitter and continue building as a team."
