Pole vaulters shine at Washburn Rust Buster

This past weekend, the Cowley College men's and women's track and field teams traveled to Topeka, KS, to participate in the Washburn University Rust Buster. For most of the team, it was their first meet of the season and first ever in a Tiger uniform. It was a long day of track and field as the meet hosted well over 1,000 athletes.

"They do not call this meet the Rust Buster for no reason; we have a lot of that," Cowley head coach Cameron Rieth said. "It looked like the very first meet of the season. We have some potential, there is no doubt, but we still have a long way to go."

Two more vaulters punched their tickets to nationals, with women's pole vaulter Dakota Dapper and men's pole vaulter Riley Hunter hitting the standard. Lady Tiger freshman Kennedy Kizarr tied last week's national qualifying pole vault mark.

"The pole vault is one of the events we really hang our hat on, and we want to be one of the best JUCOs in the nation at it," Rieth said. "I am not surprised with how well they are doing, and I am excited to watch them keep progressing."

Other Tigers performing well and establishing new program top-15 marks were Isabella Kupka in the women's 200-meter dash, Victor Morfin in the men's high jump, Austin Schaeffer in the men's mile run, and Dagen Geier in the men's 60-meter hurdles.

The Tiger track and field teams will travel to Wichita State University to compete at the Herm Wilson Invite on Friday and Saturday. Friday's competition will begin at 11 a.m.

"We just need to keep putting in the work and doing the small things right," Rieth said.
