Tiger track and field athletes face big-time competition at Shocker Spring Invite

The Cowley College men's and women's track and field teams recently competed at the Shocker Spring Invite, hosted by Wichita State University, for their second competition of the 2024 outdoor schedule. The Tigers went head-on against partial squads from Wichita State, Oklahoma State University, Kansas State University, Kansas University, and Colby Community College.

On the men's side, Cowley had top-15 all-time program performances from Siyabonga Jiyane (200-meter dash), Mason Bickle (3,000-meter run), Miquel Cruz (3,000-meter run), Dagen Geier (110-meter hurdles), Ranaldo Hanna (high jump), and Ivan Seonane-Alonso (400-meter hurdles).

"Ivan Seonane-Alonso had a great debut in the 400-meter hurdles," Cowley head coach Cameron Rieth said.

The Lady Tigers were led by Tavarie Campbell throwing down a six-second personal best time in the 1,500-meter run, while Genesis Bautista had a solid debut in the 100-meter hurdles and Cierra Gray did well in the shot put.

"Overall, we had a solid weekend," Rieth said. "We kind of had a whirlwind of different weather conditions over the course of two days, but this is the case during the outdoor season in the Midwest. It's important to learn how to make the little adjustments in the competition to be able to still put your best foot forward and compete regardless of the weather."

The Tiger track and field teams will next compete on Friday and Saturday at the Friends University Open in Wichita, KS. Friday's meet will begin at 10 a.m., and Saturday's competition will start at 9 a.m.

"We just want to keep getting better in all aspects," Rieth said.
